Mr. Phelps: Please e-mail

About once a day (it seems ... I'm not really counting) we find an answering machine message that goes something like this: "Please call Mr. Phelps at 1-800-377-7789." Sometimes it's a male voice, sometimes a female. It couldn't possibly be anything important or they would assign an actual live person to do the calling (especially if involved us owing someone money, which we don't, as far as I know). I've never called back because I'm sure it's something like a spam e-mail: if you reply they know they have a "live one" and you'll be on a million lists. Hmm, if I really hated someone that would be a good mean thing to do to them: call "Mr. Phelps" from their phone and unleash telemarketing hell upon them. I suppose I should report these calls to someone as being a nuisance, but that seems like it would be a bit of a nuisance as well--starting with figuring out who to call. As it is it involves an extra minute or so of hearing the message and then hitting "erase" on the answering machine--not too bad when compared to all the other ways life is a big pain in the ass.

Anyway, I'm wondering: Does Mr. Phelps want to talk to anyone else, or are we special?

Yes I get this same message once a day for the past 2 months. I have never called it back and assumed, in my case, it was a creditor. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets these MR PHELPS message on their phone.

I just called the number using caller ID Blocking. It's some kind of long distance carrier trying to get your money. They gave me some alternate number to call and said they would charge my phone $4.99. I of course did not call the other number. At least now I know it's not a legit message.

It has since stopped and I haven't received a message in a couple days. It was getting quite annoying.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks Anonymous(es?)! I'm happy to know that it really is nothing I need to worry about ... but I'm sure it's illegal considering I'm on the (utterly worthless) Do-Not-Call registry. (Seriously--I think the US government is actually selling our phone mumbers to pay for their war on Iraq because we get more crap calls now than before I signed up.)

I get those messages, too! (Actually, I found this blog when I Googled "please call Mr. Phelps," because the mysteriousness of it all was killing me.) Nice to know I'm not alone.

They didn't leave a message. Now that I see others have this problem I'm going to block the number from my phone. Thank(insert fav deity here) for the web and blogs!

This is a collection company, they just have a computer that calls you over and over to call Mr. Phelps. It is legit!

Damnit! I assumed Mr. Phelps was interested in hanging out, maybe inviting me to a cookout -- I thought I had made a new friend. :(

Hey, if if makes you feel better most of the calls we get are telemarketers.

I get calls form my old buddy Mr. Phelps too....ON MY FREAKIN CELL PHONE!!!!! almost every day. It stopped for a while, but has started up again. I live in Houston now, but I am from Dallas, and my cell is a 972 area code. Is this a DFW thing????

I don't think so--I'm in Durham, NC.

I get it in Indianapolis, and I hate that mofo too!!

I wonder if there really is a Mr Phelps? I get these calls 3X EVERYDAY!!! NON-Stop!!! I am in Connecticut and disabled and it is very hard for me. I don't sleep well and get woken up everyday by this. I am on the Do Not Call Registry Nationwide and for CT. It is useless. I can't block 800 calls or out of state calls with call blocking. I just spoke to AT&T to see if it could be done and they said no. Only good for in state calls to block.

Lisa B. said...

I think I would contact the state attorney general's office if i were getting that may calls--sounds like harassment to me.

i get these calls today too. for the first time though instead if them asking me to call mr. phelps, i got a live person names jocelyn asking to call her back. so i decided to do a google search using the 1-800-377-7789 number they keep calling me from. i live in connecticut too and they've been calling me everyday on my cellphone now for about 2-3 weeks. i'm sick and tired of this $hit.

what's that website for the national do not call list.

i also heard of a do not call list where if a telemarketer calls then they have to pay you money. anyone know of that site.

NJ here, just got the infamous Mr. Phelps call. I happen to know a little about working the system. If you are on the "do no tcall list" it is easy, go here:
https://www.donotcall.gov/Complain/ComplainCheck.aspx
You have to have been on the list for 30 days and charities and other companies you already do business with are exempted. But anyone else shouldnt be calling. Although i havent received any marketing calls in over a year and suddenly I've received three in the past 2 weeks. If you are not on the "do not call list" you can get the company info from the people calling you and then tell them you want to be put on THEIR do not call list. If they call you again you can take them to small claims court and get several hundred dollars from them depending on your state. However I think Mr. Phelps deserves special treatemnt and I suggest you all file a complaint with the FTC:
https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01

OK did some more checking, it seems this is a collection agency:

Hmm so i posted a comment a month or so ago about the random call from that number, well i just got another.. and i did some more looking around.. i think i found their website! http://www.thecmigroup.com/Ourteam.htm

And a picture of the elusive "Mr. Phelps"

Maybe someone wants to get daring and find out what they actually want...

I just received a call from this number on my Vonage phone. Well, it's obviously a computer generated call because the caller's name is cut off of the voicemail message. Now I have been on the Federal DO NOT CALL registry ever since it was initiated... so clearly this caller is breaking the law. I hope it hasn't come to the point where the Federal Government is selling numbers on the DO NOT CALL registry to private collectors (which would be a typical Republican ploy for this 'best government money can buy') but if so, it needs to be exposed. I plan to research this further and take appropriate civil action to protect my privacy.

Anonymous said...

Thank you all for posting! I just got this elusive call too... and was worried. Glad to know I don't really need to worry...

What did we do before we could Google things like this? :)

Anonymous said...

OK.. I'm confused. Is this a collection agency, a long distance carrier, or a telemarketer? I just started getting the calls today.

Albany, NY

Lisa B. said...

I think it's a collection agency--I did a followup post on it.

Anonymous said...

it just called my dorm room phone here in Austin, TX.

I just googled it and found this.

Anonymous said...

I have verified that it is a collection agency. I know that I have no outstanding debts that would be subject to a collection service action. I am therefore force to conclude that the previous owner of my phone number is being sought. If I can verify this I will post another comment here.

I just got my very first message from Mr. Phelps ... Googled the number and came up with all of this info. As I suspected, these freakin' creditors have no shame ... I mean, come on ... I know I'm late on my bills, but really ...

Anonymous said...

I get a call from this company pretty much daily, including weekends. I'm on the do not call list and it still continues to call me! They stop calling for a while and then it picks back up. I've changed my phone number and that hasn't helped either. Mr P sucks!!!

Anonymous said...

so, the question is, what do we do to get mr. phelps to stop calling? (like everyone else, i get this call at least once a day.) and, yes, i came to this blog after looking up the # 800-377-7789 in google.

Lisa B. said...

I finally called the number (from work), and they asked what number I was calling from. I told them, and they asked if I was one of two people I had never heard of. I said no, and they said I wouldn't get any more calls. So far I haven't.

Anonymous said...

Yep, more Mr. Phelps here in California on a 760 number. The boy really gets around.

Anonymous said...

Okay so I got this message more than a few times and generally ignored it, but came across this blog.

I called them and a lady answered the phone and asked for my telephone number, I asked what they did and she replied that they did a number of things, among them collections.

I gave her my number and name and she said it was in regards to a bill with Time Warner Cable. She also wanted my address and social security number, which I refused to give and told her to have a nice day and hung up.

I called Time Warner and sure enough, turns out I had a bill from about 7 months ago when I canceled service and returned my box. I paid the $9.76 that I owed to them and hopefully they will stop calling. I paid directly to TWC, not the Phelps office.

To my understanding, a company can't report you to the credit agencies (who affect your credit score) unless the bill is over $50, so I'm guessing this is like a sleazy collector who can't actually report you to the credit agencies, but gets paid through being annoying.

Anyways, hope my spiel helped. Maybe you guys owe a few dollars somewhere unexpected?

Anonymous said...

I too am getting these calls daily and I owe no one a penny. They can afford to waste time and money making these calls. I am on the DO NOT CALL LIST as well. Thanks for all the postings.

I just called the number back and you just have to give them your number and they will tell you the reason they were calling you, in my case it was because someone who had my number before me owed money, but they took my number off. so just call back and they will take your number off if it is indeed a mistake.

Anonymous said...

I also get this call once a day. If I'm home, I usually let the answering machine get those 800 numbers. Tonight I took the call to ask them to take me off their calling list, only to discover it was a machine, not a live person, even when I answered. It's just bogus, I'm sure. But...it's still annoying. I typed the phone number in to Google to see if anything came up...and sure enough...this blog did. Frustrated in Mississippi.

Anonymous said...

So i just called the number back because I get the message at work like 2x daily...and I just said "take me off you call list." and they asked for the number and I gave it to them and mysteriously they said they never call that number so they can't take it off the list. Now they want me to fax them a list of all the numbers attached to my phone....do they think I'm nuts...thanks Google...glad I am not alone...Orlando, FL

I've never gotten a call since. Mr. Phelps can kiss my ***

Anonymous said...

I too get calls from CMI, Mr Phelps, a collection agency. I won't call them back though. I noticed too that many people are complaining about getting these calls since they are on the Do-Not-Call registry. Unfortunately, the Do-Not-Call registry does Not include bill collectors, ONLY telemarketing. So the collectors are not breaking the rules of the Do-Not-Call registry by calling anyone. It sucks, but unfortunately its true. You can read more about it at this site
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt107.htm
Just click on the "Will All Telemarketing Calls Stop If I Register?" link and it will take you straight to it. It even states that being registered doesn't stop calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors. In my opinion, that is still telemarketing, so should be included, but its not. So in one word about the Do-Not-Call registry, "USELESS"
You can still get calls from all kinds of telemarketing, but since they are considered a charity or whatever, they Supposedly are not considered telemarketing. Rediculous...

I get the secondary angry phone calls. My 800 number is similar to the one they give out and every week I get a call from an angry, not to mention dyslexic, person fed up with "my" calling them day and night. I recorded a couple of those angry calls because they were sad but funny -- here: http://alphatogo.com/angryguy.mp3

I'm in Colorado. I got this call today. The messages on here were really helpful! I Googled the number and got here.

I decided to call. The call started a bit strangely. A live person (male) answered and he asked, "Hello this is [person's name], can I help you?", in a polite voice. I was a bit surprised. I expected them to know why I was calling. I said, "I received a call from this number." He asked what number I was at. I told him. He said he was looking for someone with my last name, but the first name was not mine. I told him that. He asked if I knew anyone by that name. I said, "No." He said, "Alright, well we must have the wrong number. Sorry for the inconvenience." That was it.

It sounds like they got a phone list by a name lookup, but they have incomplete names. I haven't looked in a while, but my number may just be listed by my first initial. The person they were looking for had the same first initial. In other words, they're on a fishing expedition.

I found it didn't hurt to give them a call just to clear things up. It took a couple minutes. The thing is if they're a bill collector, they should've gotten names and phone numbers. It sounds like all they got were names, and they were expected to find the numbers by themselves. Dumb.

I called these people and they were looking for the person who had my number before me and they took me off the list...I hope.

I'm another recipient of the eternal "Mr Phelps" phone calls. I've actually managed to talk to a live person *once* from one of these calls and they were looking for someone with my last name - which is one of the most common last names in the U.S.! When I told them I didn't know the person, they said they'd stop calling. They did. For about a month. Now they've started up again.....argh!

Starting to think they just call everybody in a certain area with a last name in common with their intended target - which is pretty bloody annoying when you have a very common surname!!

I JUST switched cell phone providers (and therefore my number as well) and began recieving these phone calls that same day. I finally got sick of the phone calls and called them back. It was indeed a creditor looking for the previous owner of my 'new' number. All I had to do was tell them that I don't even know the guy and they took my number off their list. I'm glad I found this website!

I also am disabled and getting phone calls from Mr Phelps 800 377-7789 debt collector everyday starting at 6am and on. I changed my number which is non published and they seem to of gotten it. Isn't this illegal to obtain a person who changed there number? How are they getting it ? Quite a few violations wouldn't you say ? when you tell a creditor NOT to ever call again and they do there in violation and like i said how are they obtaining my new non pub number ? I'm a very sick person and homebound and it is really getting to me. I don't have the fight in me i used to have. For anyone that hasn't read all of this page here is there website.

I found this site several weeks ago when I was first called by this number. I never get the first part of the message b/c the stupid computer starts the message before my voice mail picks up. All I get is "That number again, is 800...blah dee f'ing blah" It started once a week, and now we are up to a couple times a day!!! I don't mind the calls, but checking the voice mail every time is so annoying. I hate it when my own friends leave me voice mails, much less some stupid recording.
At&T does not block specific numbers.

HOW DO I GET RID OF THIS???

Well I 4 sure dont know what the hell this number is but after so many calls I decided to call it and I was on hold and when I tried to hang up it would not disconnect even after I placed the phone in the cradle for 5 min.The only way I could disconnect was unplugging the phone connection from the wall so I BLOCKED THAT F-en number and I bet not have some Bull#$^& on my phone bill about calling to Neverland.
